Homecoming 2009

“Our Time to Shine In 2009”
And shine we did, at this year’s homecoming events. This year we had a very successful weekend. From the bonfire on Thursday, the parade and football game on Friday to the dinner and program on Saturday, everything was great. The town was full Friday afternoon as everyone came out to watch the parade. Our 2009 Coming Home King, Dr. Glenn Crum, and our Coming Home Queen, Mrs. Barbara Bolton, made their debut in the parade. They were escorted by their classmate, Mr. Joe Lake. The floats were all beautiful. There was so much work put into each one of them. We thank the parents and students for making the parade a wonderful experience.

The Cowboys did not disappoint during the Friday night football game. They ended the game as the victors over the Trent Gorillas. During the half time events, our Coming Home King and Queen crowned the 2009 Homecoming Queen, senior Jordan Brooks.
On Saturday, registration began at 12:30pm and the people turned out. We had 138 people register. For the first time in a while, we actually sold enough tickets to pay for the meal. We sold 118 tickets. We had originally only ordered 100 plates and the day before we called and ordered an additional 25. This was a little close for comfort. Next year, I encourage everyone to get their tickets early. We had 160 people pay their dues. If you have not paid your $10 dues, it is not too late. We have received $2,612 in scholarship donations. We give out three $1000 scholarships a year, so we are still a little short. But, we are still receiving donations

daily.
The program Saturday night, hosted by Sandra Burt Tuel and Geneva Robinson Day, was one of the best. They kept everyone on their toes. You never knew what Sandra might do or say. There was a little something for everyone in this program. The show opened with the “Church Announcements” by Nathan Robinson. He looked lovely in his red dress and red hat. He had the audience in stitches.
Jordan Brooks, the 2009 Homecoming Queen, came out and sang, “Everybody gets Famous in a Small Town.” She added a little Bryson humor into the song. Jordan did an excellent job.
Jeff Gleason and Tony Thomas enacted the song, “Cletus Take the Reel.” It was hilarious. As you can probably tell, it is a spoof off the song, “Jesus Take the Wheel.”
We had Gladys Knight and the Pips. Suzanne Brooks was Gladys and her dancing Pips were Russell Walden, Nathan Robinson and Henry Birdwell, Jr. The guys wooed us with their dance moves and worried us when one of them lost their pants.
Henry Birdwell, Jr. showed us his costume expertise as he came on stage as Sir Elton John. He was accompanied with his own set of dancers, Tracy Collins, Tracy Richardson and Mitzi Thomas. Tracy Richardson makes for one big ole gal.
The last act required the assistance of the EMT’s, Henry Birdwell, Jr. and Russell Walden. This group has been here before, but it has been awhile and everyone that was there that night could tell that time had been hard on the group. They had walkers, canes and even oxygen masks. Although they looked like they may not make it long, their acapella singing had the audience on their feet. The “Old Men” stole the show with their wonderful four part harmony. The group consisted of Clifford Smith and the Robinson brothers, Russell, Jason and Nathan. We hope to have them in future programs.
Another first, we had a representative from all the classes, starting with the Class of 1949 all the way to the Class of 2009. We really appreciate all the classes coming. Next year, we honor the classes ending in “0.” If you are from one of those classes or you have friends that are, please start making plans to attend next year’s events. The dates will be published as soon as we receive them. Thanks again to everyone for making this year such a success!!
