How teachers are integrating technology in their classes:
 (Submitted KIDS Newsletter Article)

Bryson ISD is proud to share some of our wonderful technology projects.  Our faculty and students have been extremely busy this year integrating technology.  Our teachers participated in a technology staff development day, which was presented by the KIDS grant team.  They learned how to create web pages, use the Sony Mavica cameras (the teachers received a camera for their classrooms at the end of the day), use Inspiration and Kidspiration, and were introduced to Lightspan and the KIDS website.   The training received awesome reviews by all who attended!

Students have excelled in the area of technology and have created some awesome projects including 1st Grade/HS Digital Graphics Thanksgiving Claymations; AP English Animated PowerPoints over Aesop’s  Fables; Inspiration diagrams and outlines have been used by students in science classes, and business classes (BCIS, Web, BIMM); Kidspiration has been used by several of the elementary classes and the special education teacher used it to help a student with spelling words; 5th grade-12th grade recently held a Science Fair and many students researched, typed reports, printed color images, some students even created PowerPoint presentations over their projects to present to the judges.

The Bryson ISD Community Computer Lab has been a huge success, so far.  Several of the KIDS grant team members have conducted the training, and the participants have been so excited over this experience and can not wait for future sessions.  They have created greeting cards, drawings, been introduced to various components of MS Word and Excel, learned to use the Sony Mavica cameras and insert images onto their documents, and overall had a wonderful time “playing” and learning.

Program Recognition,

Bryson ISD has been involved with the KIDS Grant program through Allen ISD. The faculty here at Bryson has grown and students have had an opportunity to develop from the knowledge and understanding gained through the KIDS Grant. I have had many favorable reports come from Lions Clubs members and other community acquaintances regarding our evenings in the computer lab. There is always a well planned lesson to help people develop a particular skill. The lesson is the most complimented portion of the session. Participants also enjoy the question/answer opportunities while they are at the computer.

Computer assisted instruction has increased observably during the time Bryson has been involved with Allen in the KIDS Grant program. The faculty has grown in awareness of the opportunities computers provide. Software and operations presented at the KIDS Grant Institute were presented to the staff in a development training in early October. Teachers were very receptive, and the training proved beneficial throughout the year.

~Burt Montgomery, Superintendent, Bryson ISD

"I have had students use the camera in speech class to prepare visual aids for their speech presentations.

We have also used it to photograph the finished products from food labs.

In April, three Food Science Classes will be preparing a step by step instructional guide for recipes that they will be preparing in class."

~Becky Kytle, FCS/Speech Teacher

I have used the technology equipment provided through KIDS Grant to record work that my students have been doing during the year. I have taken pictures of projects with the digital camera and the students and we will be making a slide show presentation as a wrap up project. This is a great way to review with students because they can remember a great deal more when they see the work they have done. I also have a visual record of what I have taught, so I don't need to keep all projects until the end of the year and my room does not become so cluttered.

Kidspiration has also become a natural extension to my writing program. The kids and I both love it!

~Dana Rice, HS Special Education Teacher

"We are working on a class storybook which we will be illustrating using our digital camera, paint, possibly the scanner, and the color printer. We've been recording center activities with our digital camera, and some have been printed with the color printer. We've done an animal research project and displayed our research on a Kidspiration web."

~Marci Reed, 2nd Grade Teacher

"Students have created their own cereal boxes, written a commercial, and have created a 30-second commercial (using the Sony Mavica).  Kidspiration has been a very beneficial  tool for students to web social studies and science concepts being taught--where nothing else was seeming to work.  Poems have been written about pictures that were taken outside with the digital camera; and on occasion, special pictures have been taken of students and sent to their parents via email so they will see what their child is accomplishing."

~Linda Wade, Elementary Special Education Teacher

"As a first grade teacher and also a Kid Institute participant – I want to tell a few things that have resulted because of the summer training and the equipment we have received.

1.     The first graders are using the digital cameras for illustrations for the books they are writing. The new cameras that we purchased made the cameras more accessible for everyone.  When they are in our rooms we are able to capture the moment.

2.     The color printers make photos much more appealing for first graders to enjoy.

3.     My classroom bought lap tops as a result of the reading academy – but we were sharing with the high school students last year – As a result of our new lap tops from the institute – the high school is using the new ones so we are able to use my lap tops for first grade.

4.     I use the laptops for word blending as well as using the paint program to write and illustrate stories and books.

5.     Due to our district no longer having a tech director – we have not been able to utilize all of our new equipment.  The electrical connections have not been made, but I hope that will be taken care of soon.

6.     The community lab has been wonderful and well received due to the hard work of our high school computer teacher (also a KIDS Grant participant).

Our technical abilities and capabilities have increased as a result of the training and equipment and with time and practice the results will be even greater."

~Lynn Nees, 1st Grade Teacher
